No. 47 goes on the wall, No. 48 (Matthew Boyd) spins gem for Tigers

Detroit – On the day the Tigers took Jack Morris’ No. 47 out of circulation and mounted it on the wall of fame in center field between Hank Greenberg and Charlie Gehringer, Matthew Boyd reminded folks that No. 48 is still very much in use.

Boyd, who has sought out Morris’ counsel several times the last couple of years, pitched six strong innings in the Tigers’ 4-2 win over the Twins on Sunday.

Two hits were all he allowed, the last a lead-off triple to center field in the second inning by Twins catcher Mitch Garver. Garver scored on a sacrifice fly and Boyd proceeded to dispatch the next 13 batters in a row.
