Nicholas Castellanos' baserunning blunder baffles Tigers manager

DETROIT -- A critical baserunning blunder by Nicholas Castellanos left manager Brad Ausmus exasperated after the Detroit Tigers dropped another game Friday night at Comerica Park.

Ausmus, who rarely offers public criticism of his players, said Castellanos' gaffe was inexplicable.

"I do my best to defend guys, but I can't defend that. I don't really know what was going through Nick's mind," he said.

Here's what happened:

The Tigers trailed by three with two runners on and one out in the eighth inning. Pinch-hitter John Hicks ripped a deep liner that was caught in front of the wall by Minnesota Twins right fielder Max Kepler.
