Mike Pelfrey already eating up solid innings

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Mike Pelfrey has been throwing well this spring. But he threw too well today at Joker Marchant Stadium.

In his fourth start of the spring, the Detroit Tigers right-hander had a pitch limit of 75. And after he mowed down the St. Louis Cardinals in the first four innings, he asked pitching coach Rich Dubee how close he was to that limit.

“He came up to me and said, ‘Hey, this is the last inning for you,’” Pelfrey said. “I was like, ‘How many do I got? I’d rather throw them in the game (and not finish in the bullpen).
