MINNEAPOLIS — The last thing the Detroit Tigers needed happened on Tuesday night at Target Field.
Matthew Boyd, who has been the team’s most dependable starting pitcher this season, left his start against the Minnesota Twins in the bottom of the fifth inning with a left oblique spasm, according to the Tigers.
Boyd had been cruising against the Twins, allowing one hit and two walks in four innings. Then came the fifth and after back-to-back walks to open the inning, Boyd was visited by pitching coach Chris Bosio and then head trainer Doug Teter.
He left the game immediately afterwards and was relieved by Warwick Saupold in emergency duty.
