The Detroit Tigers made a round of significant cuts this morning, including giving right-handed pitcher Mark Lowe his unconditional release.
The Tigers optioned catcher John Hicks to Triple-A Toledo. They also assigned the following players to minor league camp: Right-handed pitchers Joe Jimenez, Arcenio Leon, Ruben Alaniz, Logan Kensing and Edward Mujica, infielder Dominic Ficociello and outfielders Anthony Gose and Juan Perez.
Lowe, 33, is owed $5.5 million by the Tigers. The Tigers signed Lowe to a two-year, $11-million deal in December 2015. He was expected to bolster the bullpen in the late innings, but struggled with velocity and other issues.
