Longtime MLB shortstop joining Tigers as infield coordinator

Longtime Major League infielder Jose Valentin is joining the Detroit Tigers staff as the minor-league infield coordinator.

Valentin played in the big leagues with four clubs from 1992 to 2007. He most recently served as first base coach for the San Diego Padres in 2015.

Valentin will help monitor Tigers infield prospects like Dawel Lugo, Isaac Paredes and Sergio Alcantara.

Another former MLB infielder, Mariano Duncan, is joining the staff at Class A West Michigan.

The Tigers released their full list of coaching assignments on Thursday. Some of the assignments have already been announced or reported.
