Ian Kinsler put the Tigers on the board against Luis Severino with a towering solo home run to leadoff the sixth, trimming the Yankees lead to 8-1.
The dinger was just the third Tigers hit of the night, although things picked up shortly thereafter.
Alex Presley singled to right field and Justin Upton singled to left field. The Tigers couldn't do anything with the runners, as Miguel Cabrera flew out to right field, Nick Castellanos struck out swinging and Victor Martinez flew out to left field to end the inning.
