Miguel Cabrera recorded the game's first hit, singling to center. Nick Castellanos' double advanced Cabrera to third with no outs, starting a second-inning threat.
James McCann swung at the first pitch, grounding to short as Castellanos was tagged out and he was safe at first. With runners on first and third, John Hicks blasted a three-run homer, after a 10-pitch at-bat, to put the Tigers up early.
Then, Dixon Machado grounded out to second and, on a 2-0 pitch, Andrew Romine grounded out to short.
