On Thursday evening, as Fourth of July fireworks popped around his Birmingham home, Al Avila celebrated alone.
His wife, Yamile, had left for Arizona that morning — Avila will join her for the All-Star break next week to spend time with his son, Diamondbacks catcher Alex, and his two grandchildren. Avila's team — the Detroit Tigers, for whom he’s been tasked with ushering a once-perennial contender through a painful rebuilding process — was heading home from Chicago.
