Ron Gardenhire knows a thing or two about the 1968 Detroit Tigers — and about getting in trouble in class, too.
It was fourth or fifth grade when the Tigers’ manager snuck a transistor radio into his small school desk in Oklahoma to listen to the World Series that season. The Cardinals were the only team that was broadcast in Oklahoma back then, and Gardenhire was able to listen to the game for a short while before his teacher caught him.
On Saturday afternoon, many of those Tigers players were honored in front of Gardenhire, as the team celebrated the 50th anniversary of the 1968 World Series champions.
