Jordan Zimmermann contract pushes Tigers' payroll toward luxury tax

Recent player acquisitions bring the Tigers' payroll to $178 million for tax purposes.

The addition of Jordan Zimmermann goes a long way toward completing the Detroit Tigers ' starting pitching rotation for the 2016 season and beyond, but it also uses up a large portion of the available salary dollars if the team intends on keeping their payroll below the $ 189 million threshold where they would have to pay a luxury tax for the 2016 season. Considering expected arbitration salaries and player benefits, they are left with under $ 18 million to pay for 13 players to complete the 25 man roster.
