Jordan Zimmermann, Christin Stewart undergo surgery, team says

DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Jordan Zimmermann and rookie outfielder Christin Stewart underwent surgery to repair a core muscle on Thursday, the team announced.

The procedure was done by Dr. William Meyers, a core specialist in Philadelphia and is sometimes referred to as a sports hernia surgery.

Both players are expected to be ready for spring training, the team said.

Stewart missed the final three games of the season in Milwaukee with what was described as an abdominal strain.

Zimmermann has battled various injuries over the last two years but never missed time due to an abdominal or groin injury.
