KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The relatively small community of Goochland, Va., is now well represented in the Detroit Tigers clubhouse.
By the time John Hicks graduated from Goochland High School, Justin Verlander had already become the school's most famous alumnus.
Eight years later, after Hicks was promoted from Triple-A Toledo, they're once again wearing the same uniform.
Hicks, claimed off waivers from the Minnesota Twins in April, will serve as the Tigers' third catcher and probably won't play much during the last month of the season. But he's had a strong year with the Mud Hens and could compete for a backup job with the Tigers or someone else in the future.
