If things don't go well for J.D. Martinez in Boston -- or he just wants to test the market again, a scary thought considering baseball's penny-pinching offseason -- he can opt out of his contract with the Red Sox after just two seasons.
Or a third. Or even a fourth.
Leave it to Scott Boras and Dave Dombrowski to get a little creative when it came to Martinez's five-year, $110 contract. They've negotiated plenty with each other over the years.
So while the Fenway natives were getting restless -- Martinez had agreed to a contract a week ago, but there had been no official announcement -- those two were putting in some protections for both sides regarding one of the game's current top power hitters.
