KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Dawel Lugo, one of three minor-league infielders acquired by the Detroit Tigers in this week's J.D. Martinez trade, will be burdened with unusually high expectations for a player who's not even among the organization's top 10 prospects.
The 22-year-old, who made his debut at Double-A Erie on Thursday night, will be a "real good third baseman at the Major League level," Tigers general manager Al Avila said after announcing the move.
So what does that mean for the Tigers' current third baseman, Nicholas Castellanos? Probably not much.
Envision the best-case scenario: Lugo is promoted to Triple-A Toledo in 2018 and hits well enough to deserve a Major League promotion in 2019.
