BALTIMORE — When the Detroit Tigers began the regular season two months ago, Jordy Mercer started at shortstop and Josh Harrison at second base, turning double plays like they had in Pittsburgh for many years.
Both veterans were coveted by the Tigers for their stability. Mercer signed a few months earlier, at the winter meetings for $5.5 million, and then Harrison came aboard halfway through spring training at $2 million.
