Henning: Tigers backup catcher Hicks bides his time

Chicago – If the Tigers weren’t involved in this safari known as The Playoff Hunt, they would be experimenting in September with a lineup and with early thoughts about a 2017 roster.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus might, for example, want a bead on his current third-string catcher, John Hicks, knowing that Jarrod Saltalamacchia is headed for free agency and the Tigers are mere months from needing a back-up for James McCann.

But, as Ausmus said before Wednesday’s (2:10 p.m.) game against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field:
