Fulmer named Sporting News AL Rookie of Year

Tigers right-hander Michael Fulmer has been named Sporting News' American League Rookie of the Year.

The 23-year-old was 11-7 with a 3.06 ERA in 26 starts, fanning 132 batters in 159 innings.

The Sporting News' Rookie of the Year Award is voted upon by players. Fulmer garnered 61 votes from his peers. Cleveland's Tyler Naquin came in second with 35 votes, while Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez finished third with 27.

Fulmer is the seventh Tiger to earn the award. Other winners include Harvey Kuenn (1953), Mark Fidrych (1976), Dave Rozema (1977), Mike Henneman (1987), Justin Verlander (2006) and Austin Jackson (2010).
