SAN DIEGO -- Former Detroit Tigers closer Francisco Rodriguez is on the verge of signing with the Washington Nationals.
Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reported that K-Rod could sign as early as Monday.
Rodriguez would likely begin with the Nationals' Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse before joining the big-league club.
Rodriguez, once of the game's top closers, was 2-5 with a 7.82 ERA in 25 1/3 innings this year. He added just seven saves to his career total (437), which is fourth all-time behind Mariano Rivera, Trevor Hoffman and Lee Smith.
The Tigers owe Rodriguez the prorated portion of his $6 million, or about $3.
