Former Tiger Leonys Martin released from hospital after battling illness

After 11 days in the hospital fighting a potentially life-threatening infection, former Detroit Tigers outfielder Leonys Martin is going home.

Martin was released from the Cleveland Clinic on Sunday, according to a statement from the Cleveland Indians.

The Tigers traded him to the Indians on July 31 for minor-league infielder Willi Castro. The Indians urgently needed a left-handed center fielder and Martin seemed like a perfect fit.

Martin hit .333 with two home runs in six games with the Indians before suddenly becoming ill after the game on Aug. 7. A day later, he was admitted to the Cleveland Clinic in critical condition.
