MACKINAC ISLAND – “The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball.”
Those were the words of James Earl Jones’ Terrence Mann in the classic 1989 film “Field of Dreams,” an iconic monologue meant to capture the country’s love affair with the game that would become “America’s pastime.”
And while there was no baseball field rising out of a cornfield in Iowa on Saturday, July 23, there was game of vintage baseball on an island in Michigan. Despite some soggy weather, more than 200 “cranks” were in attendance as the Mackinaw City Boys took down the Fort Mackinac Never Sweats 22-12 in the circa-1860 style playing of America's game.
