SAN DIEGO -- Mikie Mahtook slapped a 3-2 pitch to right field for a two-run single, breaking a 5-5 stalemate in the ninth inning and putting the Detroit Tigers in position for their first win since June 16.
After a week in which everything that could go wrong did go wrong, Tigers closer Justin Wilson left little suspense in the ninth. He retired the San Diego Padres in order to give the Tigers a 7-5 win Sunday afternoon at Petco Park.
The Tigers snapped an eight-game losing streak and avoided falling into their worst slump since 2005.
