Charlie Gehringer is a Detroit Tigers legend, complete with Hall of Fame membership, a retired number, a statue at Comerica Park and a memorable nickname: "The Mechanical Man."
On Wednesday, Matt Stairs, "The Unmechanical Man," turns 51.
A Canadian native and member of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame (Class of 2015), the well-travelled “Wonder Hamster” played for 12 franchises, including 14 games with the Tigers back in 2006.
In addition to being a Tiger, he was <deep breath> an Expo, a Red Sock, an Athletic, a Cub, a Brewer, a Pirate, a Royal, a Ranger, a Blue Jay, a Phillie, a Padre and, finally, a National.
