WHITEHALL, MI - It's closing in on the 50th anniversary of the Detroit Tigers winning the World Series in 1968.
Denny McLain, the last major league pitcher to win 30 games during that magical season, can't believe it was that long ago when the Tigers grabbed the heart of a city bubbling over with racial tensions.
McLain, who played for the Tigers from 1963-70 and then fell on hard times of his own with suspensions from baseball and later time in prison, still follows the game and the Tigers. McLain, 72, lives in the Brighton area and was on hand to sign autographs at a baseball card show Saturday in Whitehall.
