PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – It has been over a year.
But Sunday afternoon against the New York Mets (1:10 p.m., MLB Network), Detroit Tigers infielder Dixon Machado will start at third base.
With third baseman Nick Castellanos out of the lineup recovering from flu-like symptoms, Machado will have an opportunity to showcase his versatility, which won’t hurt his chances of capturing a roster spot.
“Versatility will help, for sure,” manager Brad Ausmus said. “Versatility always helps when it comes to guys that could potentially be coming off the bench.”
Machado, a shortstop by trade, hasn’t played third base since 2015 with Triple-A Toledo.
