Detroit Tigers take fond memories of College World Series to Omaha

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — By mid-afternoon Wednesday, Matthew Boyd had already hit the road for a return trip to the place that put him on the map.

Six years ago this week, the Detroit Tigers’ left-hander pitched the game of his college career, shutting out Indiana in a College World Series elimination game for Oregon State. The Beavers lost to Mississippi State the next game and UCLA went on to the championship, but the center-stage outing certainly served as one of Boyd’s best memories as an amateur.

While his teammates readied for Wednesday night’s game against the Royals at Kauffman Stadium, Boyd was driving to Omaha, Neb.
