The Detroit Tigers’ Fourth of July fireworks came early on Saturday.
Shortly before 2 p.m., Spencer Torkelson, the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s MLB draft, emerged from the visitor’s dugout at Comerica Park for his first formal workout of summer camp.
Soon, the former Arizona State slugger put on his first batting practice show at his future home.
Swinging in front of the Tigers players, the coaching staff and assorted front office members watching from the stands, Torkelson showed the kind of power the team drafted him for, hitting eight or nine baseballs over Comerica Park’s spacious fences in five rounds of batting practice.
