Detroit Tigers sign utilityman Alexi Amarista to minor-league deal

Add another entrant to the Detroit Tigers’ utilityman competition.

The Tigers have signed Alexi Amarista to a minor-league deal, according to multiple persons with knowledge of the situation. The deal includes an invitation to Major League spring training.

Amarista, 28, played six positions for the Rockies last season. He hit .238 with little power but is a left-handed bat and has provided value with his versatility over a seven-year career. He debuted with the Los Angeles Angels in 2011 and played with the San Diego Padres in 2012-16. Amarista is a lifetime .231 hitter.
