Detroit Tigers promote shortstop prospect Willi Castro to big leagues

Willi Castro’s time has come.

With little reason left to keep him at Triple-A Toledo, the Detroit Tigers promoted their top infield prospect before Saturday’s game against the Twins.

Castro, 22, hit .301 with 11 home runs and 62 RBIs in Toledo this season. He stole 17 bases and posted an OPS of .833. He is the leading candidate to start at shortstop next season for the Tigers.

It is likely that Castro will assume the majority of playing time at shortstop: The team has been hesitant to promote prospects to the big leagues until they have a clear path to consistent playing time.
