Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Ryan Carpenter sensed a problem early Saturday night against the Chicago White Sox. Those concerns grew with each batter he faced at Comerica Park.
With the Tigers hoping to get extended work from their right-hander, Carpenter lasted only 4 1/3 innings in Saturday's 6-1 loss to the White Sox. He allowed six runs on nine hits and a walk, striking out five. After the game, Carpenter (1-2) was optioned to Triple-A Toledo.
"Early, the game really dragged," Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said. "It was a slow pace — (Carpenter) needed to pick up the pace.
