Detroit Tigers observations: Spencer Turnbull stakes claim to rotation

CLEARWATER, Fla — In his most important start of spring training, Spencer Turnbull showed his best performance.

With a Detroit Tigers starting rotation spot firmly in reach after Michael Fulmer was lost for the season with upcoming elbow ligament reconstruction surgery, Turnbull threw five scoreless innings against a powerful Phillies lineup on Wednesday afternoon.

His outing featured plenty of movement inducing weak contact against Philadelphia’s regular players, including free agent addition Bryce Harper, and that movement showed in seven strikeouts.

Turnbull faced one batter more than the minimum, allowing three hits – all singles – and one walk.
