We’ll get to the week that was in Detroit Tigers baseball in a couple paragraphs here, but first, let’s dial up the Way-Back Machine a bit early, all the way back to July 20, 1969, the day man first set foot on the moon. Yes, Saturday is the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11’s moon landing, the 50th anniversary of rising to President John F. Kennedy’s 1962 challenge to go to the moon, “not because they are easy, but because they are hard.” We’re not going to compare the Tigers’ rebuild to putting a man on the moon — look, nothing is exploding if Al Avila doesn’t stick the landing at the trade deadline this year — but the rebuild is certainly proving to be one of those hard things, not one of those easy things.
