Detroit Tigers' John Hicks to undergo surgery, likely out for season

John Hicks’ season is likely over.

After visiting Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia on Wednesday afternoon, Hicks will undergo surgery to repair a bilateral core muscle defect in his abdominal wall, Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said.

The recovery time for the injury is 3-6 weeks, Gardenhire said, meaning Hicks is likely out for the season. He was placed on the 10-day disabled list on Aug. 6 in Anaheim, after dealing with the issue for more than a month before.

“It is hard," Hicks said earlier in the week. "I mean, obviously, I want to be on the field but there comes a point where you gotta look yourself in the mirror and say, ‘Is this helping me or hurting me?
