Detroit Tigers held to just two hits in 6-0 loss to Blue Jays

TORONTO — The Detroit Tigers will not go undefeated this season.

One night after winning on Opening Day in dramatic fashion, the Tigers’ bats were silenced by Michigan native Matt Shoemaker in a 6-0 loss to the Blue Jays.

Shoemaker, a Trenton native and Eastern Michigan alum, threw seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits.

For the Tigers, Matthew Boyd racked up 10 strikeouts, but struggled in the bottom of the fourth inning, allowing hard contact and four runs. In that frame, Boyd caught entirely too much of home plate. Three of those runs came on a two-out single by Freddy Galvis; on the play, center fielder Mikie Mahtook lost the handle, which allowed the third run to score.
