The Detroit Tigers continued to emphasize their rebuild through a youth movement Thursday when they outrighted veteran infielder Jordy Mercer, who cleared waivers and elected free agency.
“It was just the roster,” manager Ron Gardenhire said. “We had to get down to 28 and lose two players and make two decisions here.
“It’s just unfortunate we had to do that. We all love the guy and he did well while he was here, has helped us.
