QUEENS, N.Y. — At the end of Saturday's marathon, Detroit Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire had next to nothing at his disposal.
Nobody on his bench, only one relief pitcher in the bullpen — closer Shane Greene, who was reserved for a save situation — and just a few starting pitchers in the Tigers’ dugout with their cleats on.
So, with two outs in the top of the 13th inning, Gregory Soto — the rookie left-hander who went 2-for-2 on Friday night in his first time hitting since his teenage years —stepped into the Tigers’ on-deck circle.
