Detroit Tigers agree to deal with catcher Austin Romine, brother of ex-Tiger

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — And on the final day of the winter meetings, the Detroit Tigers made a move.

As the baseball world departed the Manchester Grand Hyatt during Thursday morning’s Rule 5 draft, the Tigers closed in on a deal with catcher Austin Romine.

The deal, first reported by George King of the New York Post, is for one year and $4 million, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

Romine, 31, is a career .239 hitter with limited power in parts of eight seasons, but perhaps he will fare better with more consistent playing time: In 2019, he hit .
