WASHINGTON – The break the Detroit Tigers needed was not a big hit or a big pitch or a big play.
It was a blown call.
And when umpires determined that Anthony Gose did not violate the first-year slide rule while trying to break up a double play at second base in the sixth inning, the Tigers took a lead. Then they took advantage, and got the big play later.
Miguel Cabrera followed with a pinch-hit, two-out RBI single and the Tigers finally hung onto a late lead to snap their seven-game losing streak, 5-4, over the Nationals on tonight at Nationals Park.
