LAKELAND, Fla. — The Detroit Tigers topped the New York Yankees, 5-3, on Thursday at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium, improving to 2-3 (with two ties) in Grapefruit League play.

The game ended after the seventh inning due to rain.

What happened

Following a 36-minute rain delay, the Tigers mounted a comeback with a five-run sixth inning. Facing Yankees left-handed reliever Joely Rodriguez, Jeimer Candelario hit a first-pitch changeup for a solo home run to left-center field to put the Tigers on the scoreboard.

Candelario's home run was his first hit in spring training and snapped a streak of six consecutive strikeouts.
