DETROIT -- Matthew Boyd couldn't duplicate his no-hit bid against the White Sox in their first meeting since he fell an out shy last September, but he duplicated his scoreless pitching with six shutout innings as the Tigers teed off for three homers off James Shields in a 7-2 win over the White Sox on Thursday afternoon at Comerica Park.
The Tigers, who split a two-game set against the Cubs earlier in the week, transitioned quickly to Chicago's crosstown club and a familiar foe in Shields. Boyd (8-11) didn't have nearly as much suspense in his rematch with the Sox, but thwarted early damage with help from an effective breaking ball and change of speeds that sent White Sox hitters flailing for six strikeouts in as many innings, nullifying six hits and a walk.
