Former Toledo Mud Hens manager Larry Parrish said he always viewed Mike Hessman as a baseball lifer. So Parrish spent the past couple of seasons talking to his veteran slugger about some of the important decisions he had to make.
Hessman, who retired this past season with more career home runs than anyone in the U.S.-based minor leagues, will head to spring training next year as a hitting coach in the Tigers’ farm system.
“He was a guy you could see staying in the game,” Parrish said. “He enjoyed the game. He tried to know as much about the game as he could as a player.
