Avila: We’ll take a look at Melvin Upton Jr.

Melvin Upton Jr. has a younger brother playing left field in Detroit. The Tigers have an injury-created void in right field being filled by a platoon, and a rookie in center field. Is there a fit for the elder brother in a Tigers uniform?

General manager Al Avila said they’ll do their due diligence to figure that out.

The Blue Jays dropped Upton on Sunday from their roster with one year left on his contract. He’ll be on release waivers until Wednesday.

“We saw that,” Avila said of Upton’s release. “Just like anything else, we’ll look into it and see if it makes sense for us, maybe on a Minor League contract.
