GRAND RAPIDS - Andy VanHekken is back on the mound - this time as a coach.
The Holland native and former Detroit Tigers pitcher has joined Calvin University as pitching coach.
VanHekken, a Holland High School graduate, joins the Calvin baseball program after a 21-year professional career as a pitcher, which included a stretch in the major leagues with the Detroit Tigers in 2002 when he threw a shutout in his major league debut.
"I am looking forward to this new challenge and happy to be joining a great coaching staff," VanHekken said. "I'm anxious to get started and to help this program continue to grow.
