SAN DIEGO -- Detroit Tigers general manager Al Avila never spoke in definitive language about the future of Brad Ausmus when he met with reporters on Friday night.
It wasn't for lack of our trying. But Avila was being understandably cautious.
For one thing, votes of confidence are largely meaningless. A vote of confidence might invite more speculation about Ausmus' future than it would prevent.
It's also understandable, as the Tigers continue to find new and frustrating ways to lose mediocre teams (and pitchers), that Avila doesn't want to publicly paint himself into a corner one way or another.
