After distinguished career, pitching coach Jones retires

Tigers pitching coach Jeff Jones announced his retirement on Monday, capping a 38-year career in professional baseball.

Jones, 59, has served as the Tigers' pitching coach since his July 3, 2011, marking the first time he served in that capacity at the Major League level. During his tenure, Justin Verlander (2011) and Max Scherzer ('13) each captured the American League Cy Young Award, while Anibal Sanchez won the American League ERA crown in '13.

"I am grateful for the opportunity the Tigers have afforded me through the years and enjoyed working on [manager] Brad [Ausmus'] staff and with Jim Leyland," said Jones.
