'A perfect storm:' How Tigers' 2 trades came together just before deadline

DETROIT -- General manager Al Avila was at his home in suburban Detroit after a busy day that had already included the unexpected trade of outfielder Justin Upton.

It was about to get even wilder.

The highs -- and lows -- of the storied Tigers career of Justin Verlander

JV's 13 years with the Tigers featured many more highs than lows.

Just before 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, the Houston Astros reached out to Avila. They were willing to meet the Tigers' price for ace Justin Verlander.

There were 90 minutes left until the midnight deadline and the Tigers, Astros and Verlander, who was at his place just three miles away from Avila, would use every last second.
