7 years after being drafted by Tigers, Jeff Ferrell back in big leagues

DETROIT -- In the two years since making his Major League debut with the Detroit Tigers in 2015, right-handed pitcher Jeff Ferrell has been optioned, injured, designated for assignment, released and then re-signed.

On Sunday, his journey back to the big leagues culminated with another promotion to Detroit when the Tigers purchased his contract and designated right-handed reliever Edward Mujica for assignment.

"I was hoping I would (get an opportunity)," Ferrell said. "I didn't really know. I had to keep pitching well and see what happens."

Ferrell, 26, was 3-1 with a 2.28 ERA in 49 games with Toledo and Double-A Erie in 2017.
