One area where the Detroit Tigers have consistently struck out in the draft over the years has been in taking college hitters beyond the first few rounds. They struck gold with Kerry Carpenter, but overall they’ve rarely gotten much help from these picks. 2023 13th rounder Brett Callahan may help break that trend, and continues a tendency from the Tigers to hunt for undervalued talent from smaller East Coast and upper Midwest schools.
Now 23 years old, Callahan played Division I ball for St. Joseph’s in Philadelphia, part of the Atlantic 10 conference. He hit 11 homers in 53 games in his junior year while walking nearly as often as he struck out.
