2016 top pick Matt Manning to make season debut with Whitecaps

Starting pitcher Matt Manning, the Detroit Tigers No. 1 pick in 2016, has been activated by the West Michigan Whitecaps and is scheduled to make his season debut Friday night at the Great Lakes Loons.

Manning had been on the disabled list with an oblique strain remained in Lakeland, Fla, as the Whitecaps left to begin the season two weeks ago.

The 20-year-old right-hander, ranked the Tigers' No. 2 prospect and No. 61 overall among MLB Pipeline's Top 100 prospects, was the ninth overall pick in 2016 out of Sheldon High School in Elk Grove, CA.

With Connecticut last season, Manning went 2-2 with a 1.
