100 mph fastballs, then a homer: Shohei Ohtani hype train, full spead ahead

Babe Ruth would be proud.

The Los Angeles Angels are pretty happy, too.

Rookie Shohei Ohtani came over from Japan hyped as a two-way player and after an up-and-down spring training, critics questioned whether the hype was justified. At least for one week, those questions seem to have been answered.

Ohtani picked up a win in his major league pitching debut against the Oakland Athletics, with a fastball that touched 100 mph and some nasty off-speed pitches.

Shohei Ohtani threw 39 fastballs today. The average velocity: 97.8 mph. Hit 100 three times and 99 nine more.
